Interesting facts about cologne:
The trade fair city

When you think of Cologne, the Cologne Cathedral likely comes to mind first—a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But the area around the Cathedral offers other attractions as well, such as the Romano-Germanic Museum, the Chocolate Museum, and the popular Schildergasse with its shopping opportunities.

Here, you can immerse yourself in the Rhenish lifestyle of Cologne, including the famous Kölsch beer (both the beverage and the dialect). The city’s numerous traditional brew houses provide perfect spots for relaxation. If you prefer the outdoors, the Rhine Park is ideal for walks, picnics, and enjoying moments of peace. For a unique 360° panoramic view of the city, the viewing platform on the modern Cologne Triangle skyscraper is highly recommended. Please contact our experts if you need more informations.

You have already organised your trade fair visit and are now wondering if you can extend your trip to Cologne a little? Take some time out and take a boat trip on the Rhine or visit one of the many breweries in the city.

A real insider tip: In the student quarter Kwartier Latäng, there are many great cafés and bars to enjoy – just like in Paris. Here, many small concerts often create a lively atmosphere on the streets. The cabaret and light entertainment theatre with the beautiful name “Senftöpfchen” also guarantee a successful evening. In line with the motto “small is beautiful”, plenty of good entertainment is provided there.

Is this your first visit to Cologne? Then a visit to Cologne Cathedral is an essential item on your agenda. Cologne’s landmark is located directly at the central railway station and is considered the second tallest church in Germany. You will also find the mortal remains of the Three Magi here. The Cologne Chocolate Museum offers enjoyment of a different kind. The museum is located directly at the Rheinauhafen, not far from Cologne Cathedral, and also invites you to try the chocolate – every chocoholic will be happy here.

After an eventful day at the trade fair, are you tempted by Cologne’s gastronomy? We have a few tips where you can go to have a delicious meal.

Hearty Cologne delicacies await you at Bierhaus am Rhein. The cosy ambience in the vaulted cellar, equipped with knight’s armours, is an extravagant highlight. And of course, you can drink the popular Kölsch here.

The best brewery and pub cuisine can also be found at “Dom im Stapelhaus”, with what is probably the most beautiful roof terrace in Cologne. “Reibekuchen” (potato fritters) of various kinds are on the menu every Friday – from sweet to savoury. With “Himmel un Äd” (black pudding with mashed potatoes, braised onions, and apple sauce), “hausgemachter Schweinshaxe” (braised pork trotter), or “Rheinischen Sauerbraten” (homemade marinated beef), you can indulge with Cologne classics.

However, if you are looking for old-established breweries, a visit to the “Stüsser” is not to be missed. The 3rd generation brewery has stood for a rustic atmosphere with Cologne hospitality since 1904. Try the homemade beer bread with homemade liver sausage, Flönz (local smoked black pudding), or ground pork cooked sausage, a real treat for the taste buds.

You are in the trade fair city on a Thursday? Then we recommend trip to the street food market at Rudolfplatz. You are sure to find something tasty there.

You still haven’t found what you’re looking for among the recommended tips? You would like to find the right restaurant spontaneously and without a lot of research? You can find your desired restaurant with just a few clicks via GlobalGuest.
